Federal judge orders California to release data on federal wiretap orders

Federal Judge Mark Goldsmith ordered California to turn over records of federal wiretapping orders.

Goldsmith issued a three-page order Thursday on behalf of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

The orders, issued in conjunction with a request from the California Public Utilities Commission, sought information on how many wiretaps were issued and how many people were searched, as well as the identities of wiretap targets and other details.

Goldstein also ordered California agencies to provide him with “all documents, records and other information necessary to comply with the court order,” as well a copy of the court orders and a copy if he wishes of the wiretap warrants.
